FESTIVAL SCHEDULE Thursday November 9
2:00 pm Academy of Music Shorts #1: Short Documentaries Caught in Paint Rita Blitt ˇ 6 min. Artist Rita Blitt paints
on transparent surfaces while the David Parsons Dance Company, seen through the
painting, dance in midair imitating Blitt's paint strokes. Photographer
Lois Greenfield shoots dynamic stills during the process. rita@ritablitt.com
The Rhythm of Youth Brendon Foster-Algoo ˇ 7 min. The story of Steven
Eliopoulos, an 11-year-old who plays the drums in a rock band with his older
brothers, is the story of the sacrifices of immigrant parents and the blurring
of the line between brotherhood and surrogate parenthood.
Unicorn Pride Linnea Toney ˇ 14 min. A small Texas town claims
to have the only high school in the nation with a unicorn as its mascot. Kooky faculty and fanatical parents and
students take the rah-rah spirit to another level.
My Eyes Were
Fresh: The Life and Photographs of
John Gutmann Jane Reed ˇ 30 min. In 1933 John Gutmann was
forced to leave a promising career as a painter in Germany to start a new life
in the United States. Here he made an important contribution to the history of
modern photography and forged a link between European modernism and the
burgeoning artistic culture of San Francisco.
Birdstate Geoff Adams ˇ 18 min. "Well, we've learned
quite a bit today about the Rhode Island Red and how it became our state bird,
and I'm just trying to figure out: What the heck does it all mean?" Quirky mix of animated and live-action vignettes
ponders the significance of the chicken that represents our tiniest state. 4:30 pm Academy of Music Michael Meiners ˇ 81
min. An eccentric socialite
with a knack for hopelessly wild adventures struggles when she is disowned by
her millionaire father and abandoned by her teenage son. At once shocking and
endearing, Dee Dee overcomes her rough exterior to draw people in with her
childlike joy of life and her heart of gold.
7:00 pm Academy of Music
David Horgan ˇ 94 min. Two years after losing his
wife, Ryan Tripp wakes up in the hospital to find that he survived a house fire
that claimed the lives of his three sons. Hundreds of miles away, Anna Dias,
whose inability to get pregnant is affecting her relationship with her
boyfriend, is haunted by the spirits of three young boys. Anna falls into the
realm of a sacred monument called Cathedral Pines and begins to unravel the
secrets of a 400-year-old curse. The screenplay is by WRNX's Donnie Moorhouse.
7:00 pm Pleasant Street
Theater
Patricia Foulkrod ˇ 72
minutes Hailed as "powerful" and
"quietly unflinching," Patricia Foulkrod's searing documentary tells the stories of young American soldiers who heeded the
call for military service in Iraq. The terrible conflict, depicted with ferocious
honesty, is a prelude to the even more challenging battles fought by the
soldiers after they return home--dealing with personal demons, an
uncomprehending public and an indifferent government. Each soldier becomes a new kind of hero, bearing witness, giving
support to other veterans and learning to fearlessly wield the most powerful
weapon of all--the truth.
9:30 pm Academy of Music Adiós, Papitas Fritas David Appelbaum ˇ 14 min. An old man recounts the
first twenty-five years of his life, from his tragic childhood to meeting his
great love.
A Cigar at the Beach Stephen Keep Mills ˇ 15
min. A man withdraws to an
empty beach to smoke a cigar and fantasize. An approaching storm across the
water mirrors the storm inside him as his fantasies propel him to the very edge
of himself and to a surprise yearning greater than flesh or adventure.
Quitters Henry Miller ˇ 12 min. Two chain-smoking
roommates make a friendly bet to see who can go longer without smoking a
cigarette. As the days pass and tension mounts, both men do everything they can
to hold on to what sanity they have left as they learn the true nature of
addiction.
Available Men David Dean Bottrell ˇ 15 min. A Hollywood agent
(dispatched to sign a "hot" new writer) and a sensitive gay man (waiting for a
blind date), mistake each other for the person they were expecting to meet.
Hilarity ensues. industryguy@earthlink.net
The Path of Most
Resistance Peter Kelley ˇ 40 min. Tom McKenna is lonely. But
solitude is an essential part of his secretive profession--a profession he
guards even at the expense of love. But this New Year's Eve Tom is confronted
with a complication he couldn't have anticipated and is presented with an
extraordinary choice. Which path will he choose? www.thepathofmostresistance.com |
