For close to thirty years, Lawrence Hott and his partner, Diane Garey, have been producing high-caliber, award-winning documentaries. In 1978 they formed the Florentine Films consortium with filmmakers Ken Burns, Buddy Squires and Roger Sherman.

Since then, they have produced a score of documentaries and one independent feature film. Their work has received an Emmy, two Academy Award nominations, five American Film Festival Blue Ribbons, eleven CINE Golden eagles, a George Foster Peabody Award and over one hundred national and international awards. Their work has been screened at major film festivals, including the New York Film Festival, Telluride, and Women in the Director's Chair.

In 1896--a year in which poachers killed over 130,000 snowy egrets in the Florida Everglades alone--a small group of people banded together to protest this wholesale slaughter. They dubbed themselves the "Audubon Society," drawing on the fame and accomplishments of an artist whose life was a revelation of energy and daring and whose art was nothing less than the full picture of the nature of a nation. The film traces Audubon's career from its unlikely beginning to its continuing legacy.
